Dogs at War

Today the Marine Corps Times had an interesting article about the surge in dogs that will accompany the surge in troops in Afghanistan. Greg's unit has a number of these dogs, whose job it is to sniff bombs. It is, in my opinion, an extremely valiant job, and shows once again just how amazing dogs are. All of the dogs in Greg's unit are black labs, and apparently their work ethic puts Rocky's to shame (don't even say what you're thinking...I know, that's not saying much). That's not to say they don't have weaknesses - the dog who travels on convoys with Greg used to be afraid of any person in a helmet, which it was obviously a problem. Needless to say, this became a priority and the issue was solved:)

Anyway, these dogs work in crazy conditions, putting their lives on the line for the people who put their lives on the line for all of us. They work in freezing temps in the winter, and 120+ temps in the winter. The most amazing thing, which I read in this article, was that only two military dogs have been lost in Southern Afghanistan (where Greg is) in the past five years, which is great.
