Brother and Sister

Happy Halloween!

I can't believe we are already at the end of October. Caroline will be a month old on Tuesday (if you're counting week by week...obviously November 6 isn't until next weekend). I can't believe it! This week she has started "talking" to herself, making lots of little coos and grunts. She's also become pretty proficient at turning her head from one side to the other when she is lying on her tummy. She tends to be very determined when figuring this move out, which in turn brings out new sounds in her vocabulary. It's very cute!

Greg's mom is here now, and we are having a lot of fun. She has been nice enough to babysit Caroline while I get out on my own (go to the dentist, eat lunch with a friend), which has been nice. I'm finally starting to feel somewhat human again, which is a good feeling. I attribute this in part to Caroline's new routine of sleeping for one 4-5 hour stretch every night - it is much more manageable than 2-3 hour increments!

I will post up new photos of her next. She is growing very fast, and is becoming more alert every day. I think she's starting to like our world better than her old one, which I couldn't say was the case for the past few weeks.

On another note, Greg seems to be doing well. He received the DVD I sent him from the week Caroline was born, and eagerly awaits updates about her. A new laundry facility just opened at his base, so he's very excited about that, since he no longer has to handwash his clothes (or wash them at all for that matter - there are contractors that wash and fold his uniform for him).

I saw in the news today that his unit lost its first guy this week. It definitely brings me back to the reality of the situation at hand, since whenever he calls I imagine that he's in Annapolis at the Academy, in 29 Palms in his office or on the range, or in any place where we have previously had a long distance relationship - but never in Afghanistan. I know it's easy to become comfortable with the whole situation (which I have, in part I believe because it's the only way I won't live each moment in paranoia) but it's extremely important for us all to keep up our prayers for Greg and for all people over there. They are protecting an area the size of Rhode Island, but there are only 1,000 of them - it's basically like colonizing America :). They are literally putting their lives on the line for justice. Example? One van filled with a large Afghan family (including a 9 month pregnant woman) did not have the amount of money the Taliban was forcing her to pay as a "toll" to drive on the one paved road to get to the hospital for an appointment. They let the family go anyway, saying that they would make an exception for the family. As soon as they entered the road, the same guards bombed the car. It's horrible, it's real, and we all have to pray for peace, safety, and justice for all troops over there.

Sorry for such a somber post - it is important to put things in perspective some times.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and a spooky but safe Halloween. Everyone in Yucca sends their best!

Early thoughts on being a mommy

It's been almost three weeks since Caroline was born, and already I've decided a few things about being a mom...

1) I will always feel like an expert in something that happened three days earlier, and completely in the dark about how to solve a baby crisis in the moment. I feel like if I went back to the first week of Caroline's life, things would have gone so much more smoothly. Same with a few nights ago, when she was so gassy she didn't get to sleep for 6 hours straight. I could go on. But, if something new cropped up right now, I'd be back on Google and sticking my nose back in the baby books.

2) I have moments (mostly at night, if she is keeping me up when all I want is some sleep) when I wonder, will she ever sleep through the night? Will this ever get better? Will I ever get sleep ever again in my entire life? And then I realize, even if she acted like a newborn for the rest of her life (which she obviously won't), things WILL get better, because Greg will be home in 6 months. It's really comforting to realize that what I'm doing isn't just raising a baby, it's doing it mostly by myself for the first 6 months, so that at a bare minimum things will get better when Greg gets back.

3) As long as Rocky is fed/has relieved himself outside and Caroline is fed/dry/burped, I am a super mom. And if I can get a package to Greg in the mail that same day, I'm a super duper mom. These are my standards.

4) Every day is such a big day, and I will never again see a newborn and say "Oh, she's SO tiny/young!" Because I now know that that newborn's mom is thinking, "What the heck are you talking about...this baby is 13 long days old and that is a HUGE amount of time to me!"

5) Once in a blue moon, I'll wake up and realize that Rocky is sound asleep, as is Caroline, and I'll smile to myself knowing that everyone is resting. It's a good feeling.

6) The best motivation I can get is an email or phone call from Greg, and I feel a million times better.

So there are my thoughts for the day! Off to get a bit of shuteye before my little friend has to eat again...

First Doctor's Visit

Today Caroline and I went to her two week checkup at the doctor. She passed with flying colors, which made me so happy! She is now 7 lbs, 6 oz, so she's gained 4 oz from her birthweight and almost a full pound from what she was when we brought her home from the hospital two weeks ago. She's also grown a few centimeters, and is right in the range of where normal baby growth is at this point.

My mom left this morning, and Caroline, Rocky, and I are on our own until Greg's mom gets into town on Sunday. We are excited for her to arrive! Today the three of us went on a walk, and I think Rocky really enjoyed it. It's good to get out to get fresh air. Since I can't really start exercising for a couple of weeks, it's the least I can do (even though I'm SO antsy to get back into shape!). We also spent the day reading books (Madeline and Miss Rumphius - thank you, Caroline and Will!) and singing along to the Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music soundtracks.

Tonight after Caroline goes to bed I am catching up on three weeks of my favorite DVR'd shows. I can't wait! Vegging is the best, especially when I don't get to do it much anymore :).

Two Weeks Old and One Month Down

Today Caroline is officially two weeks old! Even though she technically won't be 2 weeks until 11:23 PM tonight, I'm treating today as a big stepping stone. I feel like the last week has been much less hectic than the first, with many of the initial "kinks" worked out. Caroline has been eating well, sleeping as well as can be expected, and is continuing to being more and more aware of her surroundings. She is absolutely adorable, and makes me smile every time I look at her. She is just so determined about everything she does, whether it's staring at her mom or her grandmother, eating, staring at a toy, listening to a book, or trying to fall asleep. The look on her face is absolutely priceless, and I love it.

The Babywise routine has definitely worked wonders so far. For the past few days she's done pretty well with eating every three hours, and has even gone 4-5 hours during the night, which has given me some much needed rest. Fingers crossed it continues to work, and becomes a true routine, not just something we've done for a couple of days.

Mom and I are both doing well, trying to get sleep when we can, and enjoying our time with Caroline. Rocky still seems to be a bit perplexed about the whole situation, but loves to sniff Caroline and soon will enjoy her.

On the other side of the world, Greg seems to be doing well. He is incredibly busy, and spends most days on the road (literally - on the one paved road in the country!). When he does have time to call, he has a 30 minute limit, which usually ends up being about 20-25 minutes by the time we get connected. When this call only comes once or twice a week, 25 minutes seems horribly short, especially given all of the changes that go on here. He still hasn't had access to his email, although we're hoping that may get better soon, and still hasn't received any snail mail, including a package I sent 5 weeks ago, before he left. Apparently the mail is all clogged up right now at the main base, as so many units are coming and going, but I'm hoping it will be worked out soon. It's really, really hard. All I want is to be able to catch up with him and to not feel pressured to hit only on the huge things that have happened (for example, I'd love to be able to tell a funny story that made me think of him in addition to telling him oh, you're a dad now!). It's definitely taking it's toll, and I'm hoping in the next few weeks it will get better. On the bright side, he has been gone 1 month, so I only have to go through 6 more months until he comes back!

Please continue to pray for us as we go through this adventure. It's not easy, but will be so satisfying when we are back together in the spring. In the meantime, Caroline, Rocky, and I will continue to hold down the fort!

11 Days Old

Today Caroline is 11 days old. I know the past 11 days may have been uneventful for most of you, but they have been some of the most eventful of my whole life! It has been a whirlwind, a blur, but at the same time has gone by slowly, and I feel like I've definitely gotten my share of quality time with Miss Caroline. Every day she becomes more and more comfortable "in this world," as my mom says. She is more alert, and can now stay up for an hour or so in between feedings before going back down for a nap.

In the past week since I've been home from the hospital, Katherine has left and my mom has come in to town. She has been a huge help, taking Rocky for walks/making sure he is fed, helping out with nighttime crying spells/feedings, and making sure the house is still standing. She's also helped me get Caroline registered in all of the systems on base (there is a massive checklist they give all new moms, and it is quite the task!), and giving me some breaks so I can get out of the house to walk Rocky, go to the grocery store, etc. I am very grateful! She will be here until next Friday, and next Sunday Linda, Greg's mom, will come for two weeks. Thank goodness for my wonderful family!

Today Mom and I are starting to really focus on the "Babywise" routine. "Babywise" is a technique for helping newborns sleep through the night that many moms either swear by or are not so fond of. Because I am the biggest creature of habit/routine freak in the world, I am a big fan of the idea. The concept is based on the "eat, wake, sleep" cycle to help your baby transition to a "normal" human schedule of sleeping at night and staying up for longer periods during the day. It also has opinions (which I find have worked so far) on allowing your baby to fall asleep on her own, without rocking or being held (which sometimes involves 10-15 minutes of crying before she falls asleep), pacifiers (they are good, but not to be used for babies to put themselves to sleep), and other things. I've heard many positive reviews, so hopefully baby Caroline will adapt well to this routine. The book says the first 10 days should really be focused on giving your baby a full feeding (and not necessarily the routine yet), which Caroline has gotten for the past week or so, but now I think she's ready to ease into it. We'll see!

Tonight my mom is having a "date night" in Palm Springs with my dad, who came out here for a few days. That means it is my first night alone with Caroline and Rocky. I'm actually kind of excited, since I've had nonstop visitors for the past month. I'm looking forward to catching up on all of my TV shows that I've missed the past two weeks (thank you, DVR!), and just having some "me" time.

Thank you all for the wonderful emails , letters, and gifts. I will get back to you all individually at some point soon, I promise, but I haven't had much time recently - I'm sure you understand!

Rocky, Caroline, and Mommy....only 6.5 more months until the family is complete!

She's Here!

Hi Everyone,

As you may know, baby Caroline finally arrived on Tuesday! Greg and I are so ecstatic, and love her so much already.

I went into labor Tuesday during the day, after my midwife told me on Monday that if I didn't have the baby within 48 hours she would take me out to dinner :). Because so many books talk about how first time moms think they are in true labor when they really aren't, I wasn't quite sure it was the real deal until the contractions were really close together. They were about 15 minutes apart in the morning, then after Katherine and I took a walk they were about 8 minutes apart for 6 or 7 hours. To speed things up, we took another walk around 5 PM, which certainly worked! Between 6:30 and 8 PM my contractions sped up to about 4 minutes apart, and by the time we left for the hospital at 9 PM they were 3 minutes apart. Needless to say, after the 40 minute drive the hospital, I was ready to get some help! The nurse on duty admitted me, called my midwife, while Katherine (who was a SAINT, by the way) helped me through each contraction.

The whole time I was in the hospital I was begging for an epidural. Unfortunately, they couldn't call the anestheseologist until my midwife came, and once she came we had to wait for the anesthesiologist to come. My midwife came 30 minutes after I arrived at the hospital; by the time she called for an epidural I was already 9 cm dilated and it was too late! And thus, very unintentionally, I joined the ranks of women who have had a natural childbirth.

I'll spare all the details, but in short, Caroline was SO ready to arrive! She was born at 11:23 PM on October 6, after we had arrived at the hospital at 9:45. Pretty amazing. I was so blessed to have such a short labor - even the staff that was working with me was shocked at how quick it was, given that it was my first baby.

Caroline is absolutely beautiful, and so sweet. She is almost a week old and has already driven me to the crazy, sleepless, new mom state, but I love her anyway. She is so beautiful. Her older brother Rocky loves her very much, and her Dad just can't wait to get home and give her a kiss in person.

I will post pics next - just thought you'd like to know that she's arrived!

Passing the Time

As you all know from my "pregnancy ticker" at the top of my blog, I am now over the 39 week mark. In fact, I have 5 days until my due date! I am more aware than anyone of how arbitrary this day is, but it's significant because the hospital on base will schedule an induction if our baby girl has not arrived by 41 weeks. Sometimes I'm convinced that she'll NEVER come (although believe me, I am hoping for sooner rather than later), so it's nice to know that there is an end (and a beginning!) in sight.

Since I last wrote, there has been a changeover of helpers out here in Yucca. Ann left last Sunday, and Katherine arrived last Saturday. The three of us had a whole day together, which was great, because it really only happens once or twice a year these days.

Towards the end of Ann's visit, I definitely hit a wall as far as how I felt. Before a week and a half ago, I had pretty high levels of energy, and felt remarkably good for someone who was in her third trimester. All of a sudden, my energy level plummeted - something that isn't helped by sleepless nights - and the "ball of hormones" that everyone describes popped up out of nowhere. It's made me realize that I really need to take care of myself, and be aware of how much activity I should be doing every day. The last thing I want to do is to be strung out before I go into labor.

That being said, Katherine and I have had a fun time doing low key, relaxing activities since her arrival. We've perused the Yucca Valley antique shops, gone to the outlets, done lots of cooking (Katherine's on a homemade bread baking streak...YUM!), and gone on daily walks with Rocky. It has also helped my spirits that Fall seems to have finally arrived out here. While Ann was here, the temps were consistently in the 100s every day, but this week it has been in the 70s or 80s, which has been so refreshing.

Probably the most adventurous activity Kat and I have done this week is to go to Joshua Tree National Park with one of my friends out here and her family. Her husband and her daughter (who is 2.5, and so cute) were camping in the Park this week, so she invited me and Katherine to join her and her 10 month old son to go surprise them for some marshmallow roasting, smore eating, stargazing fun. It was great! The park is so beautiful, and Greg and I haven't ever camped out there, so it was nice to see that side of it. I'm attaching a few pics so you can see the beauty of our own backyard!

Today Katherine went back to base to see Frank, who is Greg's friend from Navy, off. It was kind of nice to be a part of a sendoff and not be on the verge of a crying breakdown. Our presence proved worthwhile, since Frank realized at the last minute that he had forgotten his iPod at his house, so we were able to run and get it for him in time. Now he's off to join Greg in the other barren desert that looks like Yucca Valley :)

Speaking of Greg, he is doing well. I've spoken to him three times since he left, which is great. I don't mind the 3 AM phone calls (there is an 11.5 hour time difference), because I know that I'll always be available, and I'm just thankful to hear his voice! He arrived at his final base safe and sound, and sounds like he is incredibly busy. Every time he calls he asks me if I'm still pregnant, and unfortunately, the answer has not change since he left. Soon! I can't wait to answer the phone and tell him he is officially a daddy.

So that's the update. I will certainly keep you all posted with regards to baby and Greg. In the meantime, thanks again for staying in touch and letting us know you are thinking of us - it really does mean the world!
